FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

South San Diego Cadet Squadron 201 is On the Web
Squadron Adopts New Identity to Honor Heroic Mexican Airmen
and Their Cooperation With the United States Air Force
25 May 03 -- South Bay Composite Squadron 67 is now on the
web as South San Diego Cadet Squadron 201. The website may be accessed at
http://sq201.cawg.cap.gov. This
change will be reflected shortly in official paperwork to be submitted to
California Wing Headquarters to change the unit name.
PCR-CA-473 was chartered in December, 2002, as South Bay Composite Squadron
67. Prior to that, members had been nominally attached to Group 7
Headquarters and bore the identification of "Group 7 Headquarters Flight 67."
After several months of being called "Group 7 Headquarters Flight 67," "Chula
Vista Flight 67" and "South Bay Composite Squadron 67" the membership of the
unit wanted to establish a new and unique identity.
Cadet members have recently embarked on a research project to learn more
about "Squadron 201" - a unit serving the the 5th Air Force in the Philippines
in World War II. That unit, composed of Mexican pilots trained in the
United States by the USAAF has a proud tradition and maintains hero status among
the people of Mexico. In a sense, "Squadron 201" serves as similar role
models to Mexican-Americans that the Tuskegee Airmen serve to youth of
African-American descent.
It is the hope of the members of South San Diego Cadet Squadron 201 that by
adopting their new unit identity and number that the story of the heroes of the
"201st Mexican Fighter Squadron" can become more widely known. The new
squadron website tells their proud story, complete with rare photos. The
story of Squadron 201 can be accessed at:
